Club History

The History of The GMDF Club
Picture

History

Our Club was formed in March of 1991 with sixteen founding members and was originally known as the Greater Metro Doberman Fanciers.  Four of the original founding members, Dave and Larralyn McKay (Ambermark Reg’d. Dobermans) and Dianne and Jim Crompton are still active club members.  In l994 we became a Chapter Club of the Doberman Pinscher Club of Canada (DPCC).  Having met the requirements of the Canadian Kennel Club (CKC) we were eligible to hold a Doberman Specialty Show and made our debut by participating in the celebration of the DPCC’s 25th Silver Anniversary in 1994.  This prestigious 3-day “ALL DOBERMAN” event was held in London, Ontario.  Although out of the GMDF Area of Operation, we were granted permission by the CKC to hold our first Specialty Show at this event in conjunction with Thames Valley Doberman Club and the DOBE Association which hosted the Nationals.

Our annual GMDF Specialties were held for a number of years in conjunction with the Ontario County Kennel Club.  In 2000, in an effort to boost our entries, we applied to the CKC to extend our boundaries to include the City of Woodstock.  In order to better reflect our areas of operation the name of our Club was changed to the Greater Mid-Ontario Doberman Fanciers” thus allowing us to keep the original initials “GMDF”.

In order to provide service in an area that did not have a regional Doberman club, once again we submitted a request to the CKC to expand our Area of Operation and it was approved in July 2014.  Our new boundaries include Simcoe County, Peterborough County and the Kawartha Lakes Region.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  The Greater Mid-Ontario Doberman Fanciers does not condone the promotion, breeding and/or sale of White (Albino) Dobermans.

Our Objectives:
a)  To encourage and promote the breeding of the Purebred Doberman Pinscher.

b)  To educate the attitude of the Public in all aspects of Doberman Pinscher Ownership.

c)  To attract fanciers to all the educational and social aspects of owning a Doberman Pinscher.

d)  To conduct Sanction Matches, Specialty Shows, Correction Matches and Obedience Trials  under the Rules of The Canadian Kennel Club.

Although ours is not a large club, we are growing and remain strong.  Our members compete in a variety of venues - Conformation, Obedience/Rally, Agility, Therapy Dog Programs, Scent Work, Tracking and other areas.  We support the Canadian Kennel Club, the Canadian Junior Handling Program and have long-supported the Cardiomyopathy Study Program for Doberman Pinschers at the Guelph Veterinary College, first under Dr. Mike O’Grady (Cardiologist) and at present under Dr. Lynn O’Sullivan.  Dilated Cardiomyopathy is a disease that affects Doberman Pinschers as well as other breeds (and humans).  Our Club has two 24 hour Holter monitors that are available at a small rental cost to our members and other interested parties.  We urge all Doberman owners to enrol in and support studies at the Guelph Veterinary College.

We are always eager to welcome new members.  Please visit our membership page to lean more or contact us.
